Gjipe

Crag Summary

Rating: 4 out of 5.

We climbed at the ‘Ahorn’ area but there are many to explore. In a lot of ways this could be a paradise crag… a beautiful beach, a meandering lush canyon… cliffs for days…. But there were a few things we couldn’t quite figure out… a campsite guarded by ferocious guard-dogs with ‘private property’ signs (make sure you cross the beach to access the crag NOT the track into camp), lots of rubbish (the track to the beach is serious 4WD only and with visitors, a campsite and restaurants, responsible disposal is a real challenge) and then paid parking at the top which is relatively expensive and rubbishy…

BUT it still felt like a worthwhile destination with a huge variety of climbs, beautiful setting and wonderful views. With the right set-up, it would be worthwhile to spend a few days. The place has huge potential and as Albanian tourism continues to grow, hopefully the place can develop in a way that is sustainable.

  • Style: single pitch sport – but there are some multis on offer too.
  • Parking: 40.13023, 19.6580
  • Topo and Approach details: 27 Crags
  • We visited on: Tuesday, 5th Nov 2024
  • Who else was there: a few other climbers but peppered across the range of sectors. only one other pair in the spot we climbed at.

Nearby

For us this was a lone stop on the drive between Orikum (a scenic park-up by the sea) and Butrint (amazing archaeological ruins).

Camping – the Gjipe carparking attendants took a fee for us to park overnight, not glamorous and no services but did the job for accessing Gjipe.
