Smokovac

Crag Summary

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

If you climb hard, steep and want somewhere super convenient – Smokovac is an absolute go (younger kids need a watchful eye due to sloped drop-offs). The tiger stripe tufas are stunning and provide plenty of pumpy routes.

We visited after rain and there was quite a bit of seepage (especially on the easier steep routes) but harder routes were drying up and people were getting on. We ended up on the right hand side on the less attractive grey wall, but with a few dry easy routes it meant the kids could have a go too.

  • Style: Sport
  • Parking (and Camping): 42.48770, 19.30936
    • We parked (and camped overnight) at Auto Kamp Titograd which was super convenient, from the site you have a lovely view up to the Smokovac crag. The site was welcoming, basic facilities and some lovely touches especially with kids: ping pong table, swings, cosy common room, access to the rocky river (which also has a handful of short, steepish bolted routes – we didn’t try them as it was wet).
    • A few small cars did seem to squeeze parking in on the little road with the approach track.
  • Topo and Approach details: Montenegro Climbing App
  • We visited on: Saturday, 19th October 2024
  • Who else was there: a handful of other climbing pairs – unsurprising given that it was the weekend and this is the closest crag to the capital.

Nearby

Close and convenient from the Montenegro capital Podgorica. A few galleries/museums to explore but our surprise highlight was eating at the one and only Indian restaurant Masala Art. Surprising but really excellent!

Wow Factor

Rating: 2 out of 5.

The wall itself is a beautiful – however we’ve been spoilt with peaceful nature spots and the urban noise and sights filters into this one.

Approach

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A bit of a hill to climb, but easy track to follow, a quick 5-10 mins and you’re there. Add 5 mins flat from the Auto Kamp.

Shade

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

NW facing so shady mornings, no shade at the base once the sun hits.

Playtime Base

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Flat and wide enough but a bit of a slopey drop-off. One where you need to watch any toddlers.

Harder Climbs

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Plenty of 7s and 8s on steep tufa terrain.

Kiddy Climbs

Rating: 1 out of 5.

A few easier lines on the far right, less attractive grey wall.
