Crag Summary
Another location that we only stopped for a couple of nights, but is a destination in its own right – for climbing but also hiking and its pretty coastal culture. It was the perfect place for us to stop on the way back from Italy to the UK as we wanted to stick to the coast and avoid icy mountain roads. We were lucky enough to time our stop with a slice of winter sun and it was perfect!
- Style: Single pitch sport
- Parking: 43.21237, 5.52628 there is paid parking on all the little streets around here.
- Topo and Approach details: Climbing in the Calanques Guidebook is necessary to get the lay of the land and route topos. Check the Crag for any latest info as some construction was going on in the area.
- We visited on: Sunday, 15th December 2024
- Who else was there: all to ourselves perhaps because we were there in the shade on a windy winter morning – but we saw other parties up their the afternoon before (in the sun!)
Nearby
We did a wonderful family hike to Calanque de Port Pin and Calanque d’en Vau. Incredibly picturesque and lots of wonderful rock pinnacles to come back and climb another day.
As we set off on our hike we passed the small crag of Brise de Mer which was a lot less atmospheric than Calendal but has a super flat grassy base right next to the footpath so would be an easy option with the kids.
We visited the little town of Cassis one evening and it was a sight to behold, the buildings dancing with lights for Christmas.
Wow Factor
A beautiful backdrop of Calanque de Port-Miou
Approach
5 min from the top (Impasse du Calendal) – you can also access the crag from the bottom if you want to make it a bit harder!
Shade
NW facing so shade all morning, catching sun later in the afternoon. A few scrubby bushes for shade too.
Playtime Base
Scrubby rocky base. Safe enough but not much room for play.
Harder Climbs
5, 6 and low 7s are the sweet spot. Grades felt quite stiff.
Kiddy Climbs
Easy grades on the far left – but it was polished as an ice rink! Possible to set-up a top-rope from the top so the kids could have a play.
