Crag Summary
One second we were cruising down a featureless motorway, the next we found ourselves in luscious wine country, winding through quaint terracotta villages and overlooked by a pair of impressive rocky escarpments. Vergisson is one of these rocks with views out to its sister, Solutre. We opted for Vergisson and it was an absolute gem. The views were spectacular, an early start meant morning shade and the climbs, with a wide range but sweet spot in the 6s, were absolute quality as well.
When recounting the trip we revisit Vergisson often – it is such a clear example of how seeking a crag can pull you physically into the most beautiful and surprising environments – scenes that we could easily have drifted past without knowing they existed.
- Style: Single pitch sport
- Parking: 46.31290, 4.71740
- Topo and Approach details: Many of the climbs are labelled and together with a route-list it is very possible to figure things out. A local guidebook would be extremely useful if in the area for longer, research points to a Jingo Wobbly publication.
- We visited on: Thursday, 14th August 2024
- Who else was there: all to ourselves
Nearby
You can drive to the top of Vergisson and embark on walking trails with views. Mount Solutre is the sister peak which also offers walking and climbing. There is also a visitor’s centre at the base of Solutre which was closed when we passed through but looks like it would be very interesting and family friendly. You are also very clearly in wine country and just 1 hr north of Lyon.
Wow Factor
Beautiful views.
Approach
A very short walk-in. A little steep and narrow.
Shade
The area closest during the walk-in is SW but gets more due W the further you go. So the further you walk. The more morning shade you can achieve.
Playtime Base
The area at the base varies a bit depending on the area. Overall it is relatively narrow and drops-away mildly.
Harder Climbs
The steeper areas offers climbs in the 7 and 8s. Many vert technical 5s and 6s.
Kiddy Climbs
Plenty of vert 5s give kids a good go. And there are a few even easier routes too.
